WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA) released the following statement:

“The Justice Department’s decision to charge Congresswoman LaMonica McIver for performing her constitutional duty is deeply disturbing and wholly unacceptable.

“Members of Congress have clear legal authority to inspect federal detention facilities without prior notice. This isn’t a gray area—it’s established law and a vital check on executive power.

“Charging a sitting Member of Congress for lawful oversight sets a dangerous precedent. It’s not about safety or justice—it’s political retaliation masquerading as law enforcement.

“We cannot allow the Department of Justice to be used as a tool of intimidation. I stand with Congresswoman McIver and every Member committed to holding government accountable. This is a test of our democracy—and we must not fail it.”
