Rep. Carter Commends President Biden’s New Marijuana Pardons
Makes Thousands Eligible, Corrects Racial Disparities in the Justice System
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-La.) issued the following statement commending new marijuana pardons and clemencies by President Biden.
“In April of last year, I met with the White House to discuss pardons and clemency for individuals incarcerated for marijuana possession. These offenses have disproportionally impacted Black Americans, creating barriers to employment, education, and housing. I commend today’s announcement as a positive step towards correcting this injustice. This is the vital next step to give thousands of people their lives back.
“Now, I call on Congress to pass my misdemeanor expungement legislation so that these returning citizens can fully move on with their lives."
