Congressman Carter Votes to Remove a Confederate, Slaveholding, Segregationist from the Nation's Capitol
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Troy A. Carter Sr. (LA-02) joined his colleagues in voting to remove a confederate, slaveholding, segregationist from the U.S. Capitol.
“Today, I was proud to vote to replace the bust of Chief Justice Taney, author of the Dred Scott decision, with the bust of Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black American to serve on the Supreme Court, said Congressman Carter.
“The halls of Congress should reflect the principles that America was founded upon. There is no room for slaveholders or segregationists in ‘The People’s House.’ These painful symbols of racism, intolerance, and white supremacy do not deserve to be enshrined in our nation’s capitol or anywhere in our society. Today and always, I will fight to right historic wrongs and continue ensuring Congress upholds our American ideals of equality and justice for all.”
