Congressman Carter Statement on Trump Administration Dismantling Systems that Track Storms Amid Hurricane Season

June 28, 2025

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA) released the following statement:

“You can’t make this stuff up.

“We are in hurricane season — and instead of strengthening our ability to protect families, the Trump administration is cutting the very tools our scientists and emergency responders need to track deadly storms.

“Let me be clear: the federal government just announced it will stop using satellite data that helps us ‘see inside’ hurricanes — even at night, even when planes can’t fly. This data helps us spot when storms are getting stronger fast — what experts call ‘rapid intensification.’ That kind of warning can save lives.

“As a proud member of the Homeland Security Committee, with direct oversight of FEMA, and as Co-Chair of the Congressional Resilience and Recovery Caucus, I am appalled.

“This isn’t just some policy debate in Washington. This is about protecting the people of Louisiana — our families, our homes, and our future.

“We already know this season is expected to be worse than normal. Yet with no warning, they’re pulling the plug on 50% of the satellite data our hurricane experts rely on during our most dangerous months.

“Louisiana knows storms. And we know what happens when the federal government ignores science and common sense: people suffer.

“We won’t stay quiet about this. We won’t let them gamble with our safety.”
