Congressman Carter Statement, “Medicaid Is Not a Line Item—It’s a Lifeline”
NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA) released the following statement:
“Let’s be clear: what’s being proposed in Washington isn’t just a budget cut. It’s a life cut.
“Across Louisiana—from our biggest hospitals to our smallest rural clinics—healthcare leaders are sounding the alarm. Not because of politics. But because of people. Because they know what these Medicaid cuts will mean for the folks they serve every single day—our children, our seniors, people with disabilities, and working families just trying to stay afloat.
“Hospitals from Baton Rouge to Bunkie, from New Orleans to Natchitoches, are united in one voice: this would be the largest and most devastating cut to Louisiana’s health care system in our history.
“Here’s what’s at stake:
• Over $4 billion in Medicaid funding lost for Louisiana providers.
• Thousands of jobs gone—nurses, techs, security, food service, and more.
• Rural hospitals forced to reduce services—or shut down completely.
• Longer wait times, fewer doctors, and fewer clinics to serve your family.
“Let’s also talk facts. Louisiana hospitals generate:
• $38.4 billion in business activity each year.
• $14.2 billion in payroll.
• 100,000+ jobs across our state.
• And they support 5.7% of all employment in Louisiana.
“Cutting Medicaid doesn’t just hurt patients. It hurts our economy, our workforce, and our future.
“I’m proud to stand with Governor Landry, the full Louisiana Legislature, and healthcare leaders across our state who’ve all said with one voice: Louisiana cannot afford these cuts.
“Protecting Medicaid isn’t about party. It’s about people. It’s about standing up for life-saving care, strong hospitals, and resilient communities.
“To my colleagues in Washington: The people our counting on us! Don’t let Louisiana down.”
