Congressman Carter Statement on ERA Ratification
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA) released the following statement in response to President Biden’s acknowledgment that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) should be formally added to the U.S. Constitution as the 28th Amendment:
“Since my earliest days in the Louisiana State Legislature, I have advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment, which guarantees constitutional protections for every American, regardless of sex. Equality is a fundamental promise of our democracy, and the Equal Rights Amendment is essential to fulfilling that promise. Ratified by three-fourths of the states and supported by the will of the American people, the Equal Rights Amendment deserves a place in our Constitution. It ensures equal rights and protections under the law, strengthens our nation by affirming women's equality, and honors the voices of those who have fought for civil rights throughout generations.
“I’m grateful to President Biden for making this this long-overdue acknowledgement. I’m proud to have been a partner of the Biden-Harris Administration over the last four years and think this is a fitting way to close out the important work we have done. It's past time for it to be formally recognized by the Archivist as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Promises made, promises kept!”
