Congressman Carter Issues Statement on Algiers Ferry Hours

December 12, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-La.) released the following statement in response to proposed cuts in service to the Algiers Ferry hours.

“Enhancing our public transportation is essential to providing Louisianans with more access to opportunities. I am deeply invested in our community's growth and infrastructure development and recognize the significance of this terminal for both New Orleans and Algiers residents and visitors alike.

“Growing up on the Westbank, I know the importance of the ferry and have been a lifelong advocate for its services. Between the union passenger terminal, the Algiers Ferry Terminal Upgrade through the Passenger Ferry Grant Program, East Bank/West Bank bus rapid transit project, and other exciting endeavors, we have delivered over $21 million in federal funding for the RTA. Part of this funding came from competitive federal grants where the RTA made pledges to better serve commuters. Changing these hours could result in RTA noncompliance.

“Cutting the hours of this vital resource will harm residents, businesses, and tourists alike – who rely on this mode of transportation to bring them across the Mississippi.”
