Carter Statement on Dangerous Chlorine Leak, Polluter Accountability on Earth Day 2022

April 22, 2022

NEW ORLEANS, L.A. – On Earth Day 2022, Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. released the following statement in response to recent reports that an overnight chlorine leak on Monday near Plaquemine, Louisiana led to the hospitalization of at least 23 area residents

“It is extremely concerning to hear that dozens of my constituents were hospitalized due to a chlorine leak at Olin Chemical near Plaquemine, and it’s even more distressing that environmental regulators and parish officials were left in the dark.

“This is unacceptable, and sadly, is not the first time this has occurred in Louisiana’s Second Congressional District.

“Louisianians deserve healthy communities. We must seek accountability from polluters, and stronger systems of monitoring and alerts that protect our communities. Much more to come from my office on this critical issue.”
