Frequently Asked Questions on Congressman Troy Carter's Black History Essay Contest 2024

 

What is the prompt?

Respond to the following prompt:  The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were some of the most important Civil Rights legislation passed in our nation’s history. While we have made significant improvements protecting the civil rights of our citizens, there are still areas that need addressing. In 500 words or less, critically examine the state of today’s nation, identify ongoing practices that you believe infringe upon civil rights, and propose legislative changes to solve this issue. 

 

When is the application due?

Complete applications are due by April 8th, 2024 at 6pm Central Time.

 

Who is eligible to participate in this contest?

High School Students currently enrolled in 10th or 11th grade AND whose official residence is in the Second Congressional District of Louisiana (Congressman Carter's district).

How long can the essay be?

500 words maximum

When will the winner be announced?

The winner will be announced 1-3 weeks after the closure of the competition, April 8, 2024. There will only be one winner, but 1-2 Honorable Mention awards may be granted as well.

 

Who will be selecting the winner?

Congressman Carter and a panel of writers, professors, journalists, or teachers will select the winner and any students who will receive Honorable Mention awards.

 

What is the prize?

The essay contest winner will receive a certificate of recognition, their essay will be highlighted on the Congressman's online platforms, and they will be offered the opportunity for both the student and a guardian to attend an unveiling ceremony where they will receive their certificate in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2024. 

 

When will the certificate be awarded in D.C.?

Summer of 2024. The trip's timing is slightly flexible and can be coordinated to accommodate varying schedules.

 

Will the costs for the trip to receive the award be covered?

The airfare, lodging, and meal expenses will be covered for one winner and guardian (or supervising adult approved by the winner’s guardian) to attend the unveiling ceremony in Washington, D.C.

 

What permissions do I grant by submitting an application?

By submitting an application to this contest, the student and their legal guardian give permission for the student's essay, photo, name, and responses to this application (that are not personal contact information) to potentially be shared publicly by the Congressman's office. This could include, but is not limited to, sharing via social media, e-newsletters, or with the media.
